Endurance racing is motorsport decided by time, not a set number of laps. Cars from different classes share one track for hours, often a full 24, and each car is shared by several drivers. The winner is the car that covers the most distance, which rewards reliability, strategy and teamwork as much as outright speed.

What Is Endurance Racing at a Glance: Key Rules & Format
| Endurance racing | Formula 1 | |
|---|---|---|
| Race length | Fixed time (6, 8, 12 or 24 hours) | Fixed distance, about two hours |
| Drivers per car | Usually two or three, sharing | One |
| Classes on track | Several, at the same time | One |
| Winner | Most distance in the time | First to finish the laps |
| Famous example | 24 Hours of Le Mans | Monaco Grand Prix |
How an endurance race works
- Time, not laps. A 24-hour race runs through the night, and the car that has completed the most laps when the clock ends wins.
- Driver changes. Drivers swap during pit stops, so every crew needs consistent pace from each member. The winning Toyota at the 2026 24 Hours of Le Mans was shared by three drivers: Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Nyck de Vries.
- Strategy. Fuel, tires, safety cars and traffic all shape the result over many hours.
Multi-class racing: why different cars share the track
Endurance grids mix fast prototypes with grand-touring cars. They race together but are scored in separate classes, so every class has its own winner.
World Endurance Championship (WEC)
- Hypercar is the top class, with the top manufacturers.
- LMGT3 is the grand-touring class, based on GT3 cars.
- LMP2 returns each year at Le Mans.
IMSA SportsCar Championship (North America)
IMSA runs two prototype and two grand-touring classes: GTP (LMDh prototypes), LMP2, GTD Pro and GTD.
The big endurance races
- 24 Hours of Le Mans is the best-known endurance race in the world. In 2026 Toyota’s #7 car won, ending Ferrari’s three-year winning streak and giving Toyota its sixth victory. BMW’s #20 finished second. Read about Ferrari’s best Le Mans races.
- 24 Hours of Daytona opens the IMSA season in January.
- 12 Hours of Sebring completes what fans informally call the Triple Crown with Daytona and Le Mans.

2026 WEC: what changed
The Qatar and Bahrain rounds were cancelled in July 2026. Barcelona was added as the first-ever WEC round at the circuit, and Monza now closes the season. Both are six-hour races worth a maximum of 25 points each. Read our full guide to the WEC European finale at Barcelona and Monza.
At the 6 Hours of Barcelona on 18 October, Toyota’s #8 car (Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryō Hirakawa) won ahead of the sister #7, with Ferrari’s #50 third. The result sealed Toyota’s 2026 manufacturers’ title. Monza on 6–8 November closes the season.
Why fans love endurance racing
It is the closest motorsport gets to a story. There are heroes, heartbreaks and dawn finishes, and the cars are as important as the drivers. It has also produced some of the sport’s most iconic looks. Read about the Silk Cut Jaguar at Le Mans, the BMW hybrid V8 Hypercar, or the 1971 Le Mans film with Steve McQueen.
