William McComas Byron Jr. is an American stock car racing driver, born on 29 November 1997 in Charlotte, North Carolina. He drives the No. 24 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports in the NASCAR Cup Series.

He rose through the national series in three years. The K&N Pro Series East championship came in 2015 with four wins, seven Truck Series victories followed in 2016, and in 2017 he won the Xfinity Series championship.

Hendrick Motorsports put him in the Cup Series for 2018, where he was Rookie of the Year. His first win came at Daytona in August 2020, and 2023 was his breakout: six victories and third in the championship.

Then came the Daytona 500. He won it in 2024 and defended it in 2025, adding the regular season championship that year. Sixteen Cup wins and sixteen poles have followed from 314 starts, with a best championship finish of third.

Chapter 01

Champion in Three Years

Byron came out of legends cars and dirt late models in North Carolina and moved through NASCAR's national ladder faster than almost anyone of his generation. The K&N Pro Series East title came in 2015, with four wins from fourteen starts. Seven victories in twenty-three Truck Series races followed in 2016. Then 2017 with JR Motorsports in the Xfinity Series: four wins, twelve top fives, twenty-two top tens from thirty-three races, and the championship. Three seasons, three steps, two titles — and a Cup Series seat at Hendrick Motorsports waiting for 2018.

Chapter 02

Learning at Hendrick

The Cup Series took longer. He was Rookie of the Year in 2018 but scored no top fives at all, and twenty-third overall. Five top fives and five pole positions came in 2019, then his first win at Daytona in August 2020 — a superspeedway result in a season that otherwise brought fourteenth in the standings. Twelve top fives and twenty top tens in 2021 showed the pace arriving, and two wins in 2022 took him to sixth. Four full seasons of steady improvement, without yet threatening a championship.

Chapter 03

Daytona, Twice

2023 changed the picture: six wins, fifteen top fives, four poles and third in the championship. Then the Daytona 500, twice. He won the 500 in 2024, and defended it in 2025 after prevailing in NASCAR Overtime, adding the regular season championship that year. Third again in 2023 and 2024 and fourth in 2025 make him a consistent title contender without the title itself, and sixteen career poles put him among the quicker qualifiers on the grid.
