25 World Championship rallies from 146 starts, with 42 podiums and 460 stage wins. His first win came at Rally New Zealand in 1993 and his last on the Safari Rally in 2002.

In 1995, driving for Subaru. He beat his own team-mate Carlos Sainz to the title and sealed it by winning Rally GB, becoming the first British World Rally Champion and, aged 27, the youngest of his era — a record that stood until 2022.
