William Clyde Elliott II, known as Chase Elliott, is an American stock car racing driver, born on 28 November 1995 in Dawsonville, Georgia. He drives the No. 9 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports and is the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series champion.

He is the son of Bill Elliott, the 1988 Cup Series champion and a NASCAR Hall of Famer from the same Georgia town. Chase raced late models and the K&N Pro Series before reaching the national series.

In 2014 he won the Nationwide Series championship as a rookie, taking Rookie of the Year in the same season, and moved to Hendrick Motorsports in the Cup Series full time from 2016, where he was again Rookie of the Year.

His first Cup win came at Watkins Glen in 2018, and the championship followed in 2020 with five victories. He added the regular season championship in 2022. A fractured tibia and a suspension disrupted 2023, but he returned to win again in 2024, 2025 and 2026.

Chapter 01

Rookie Champion

Elliott grew up in Dawsonville, Georgia, the son of Bill Elliott, who won the Cup Series title in 1988 and went into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Chase came through late models and the K&N Pro Series, and in 2014 he won the Nationwide Series championship in his rookie season, taking Rookie of the Year alongside it. Hendrick Motorsports moved him into the Cup Series full time for 2016 in the No. 24, where he was Rookie of the Year again and took pole for the Daytona 500. Two full seasons passed without a win — twelve top fives in 2017 and fifth in the standings — before the breakthrough came.

2020

The first win arrived at Watkins Glen in August 2018, and he backed it up with two more that year. Three followed in 2019. Then 2020: five victories, fifteen top fives, twenty-two top tens from thirty-six races, the All-Star Race at Bristol, and the championship. He was twenty-four, and the second Elliott to win a Cup title, thirty-two years after his father. He has been voted NASCAR's Most Popular Driver every year since 2018.

Chapter 03

Injury, and After

Five wins and the regular season championship came in 2022, his most productive year since the title. Then 2023 went wrong: a tibia fractured while snowboarding in Colorado cost him a run of races and a suspension cost another, leaving him twenty-nine starts, no wins and seventeenth in the standings — his first season outside the playoffs. He rebuilt from there — a win in 2024, two in 2025, and two more in 2026 including the Würth 400 at Texas, running inside the top ten of the championship each year.
