Who Is Timmy Hansen?

Timmy Hansen is the 2019 FIA World Rallycross Champion. He is Swedish, born in Lidköping in 1992, and has spent his entire rallycross career with Hansen Motorsport, the team founded by his father Kenneth, who won the FIA European Rallycross Championship fourteen times up to 2008.

He came to rallycross from single-seaters. Swedish karting champion in 2008, he won races in Formula BMW Europe and in both Formula Renault 2.0 series before driving his first rallycross event at Dreux in France in 2011. A full European season in 2013 brought one win and third overall, and he did not go back to circuit racing.

The 2019 title was settled by a tiebreak. He and Andreas Bakkerud both finished the season on 211 points after the final round in Cape Town. The championship went to Hansen because he had won four events that year and Bakkerud one. Team Hansen MJP took the teams’ championship in the same season.

He has been runner-up three times as well. Second behind Petter Solberg in 2015, and second again in 2021 and 2022, the first year of the electric RX1e cars. Across twelve World RX seasons he has started 118 events, won 14 of them and stood on 51 podiums.

Three Chapters That Defined Timmy Hansen

Chapter 01

Out of the Single-Seaters

Hansen was Swedish karting champion in 2008 and spent the next three years in single-seaters, winning races in Formula BMW Europe, Formula Renault 2.0 Alps and the Eurocup. His first rallycross event was at Dreux in France in April 2011, in a borrowed Citroën Xsara Supercar. A year later his father entered him for one European round at Kouvola in the Citroën that had won Sébastien Loeb the X Games, and he finished fifth. He contested the whole European championship in 2013, won in Hungary and finished third overall from nine rounds. He did not go back to circuit racing.

The Peugeot Years

World RX began in 2014 and Hansen was in it from the first round, partnered at his father’s team by the former European champion Timur Timerzyanov. He took one win and three further podiums for 199 points and fourth in the standings. For 2015 the team had the new Peugeot 208 WRX and Davy Jeanney as the second driver; Hansen won three rounds and finished runner-up to Petter Solberg. In 2016 his team-mate was the nine-time world rally champion Sébastien Loeb.

A Title Settled on Countback

The 2019 season ran to ten rounds and Hansen won four of them, in Catalunya, Great Britain, France and Latvia. He arrived at Killarney International Raceway in Cape Town for the finale level with Andreas Bakkerud. Niclas Grönholm won the final from Bakkerud, with Hansen fourth and his brother Kevin fifth, which left the two title contenders on 211 points each. The tiebreak is event wins, and Hansen had four to Bakkerud’s one. Team Hansen MJP won the teams’ championship in the same season.
