Franco Colapinto: Full Biography

Franco Colapinto is an Argentine racing driver who has competed in Formula One since 2024, first for Williams and since 2025 for Alpine. He is the first Argentine to race in Formula One since Gastón Mazzacane in 2001.

Williams Williams put him in the car for the last nine races of 2024 in place of Logan Sargeant. He scored in Azerbaijan in only his second start and again in Austin, five points that were more than the driver he replaced managed all year, though the run also included heavy crashes in São Paulo and Las Vegas.

Alpine Alpine signed him as reserve for 2025 and then put him in the race seat from the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, replacing Jack Doohan under a plan the team described as rotating the drive. He kept it for the rest of the year and did not score a point in eighteen races, his best finish eleventh at Zandvoort.

2026 The first full season of his career has been a different story. Twelve rounds have brought 19 points and twelfth in the championship, with six top-ten finishes, no retirements and a best result of sixth.

Chapter 01

Williams

He arrived in Formula One the way several drivers on this roster did, as somebody else's replacement. Williams dropped Logan Sargeant after the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix and gave Colapinto the last nine races. He qualified well immediately and scored points in Azerbaijan in only his second start, then again in Austin: five points, more than Sargeant had managed across the whole season. Heavy crashes in São Paulo and Las Vegas were part of the same nine races, and the seat went to Carlos Sainz for 2025 regardless. He was the first Argentine in a Formula One race since 2001.

Chapter 02

Alpine

Alpine took him on as reserve for 2025 and moved him into the race seat from the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, replacing Jack Doohan in what the team called a rotation of the drive. The rotation never happened: he kept the car for the rest of the season and scored nothing with it. Eighteen races, a best finish of eleventh at Zandvoort, and twentieth in the championship. The A525 was among the slowest cars on the grid and his team mate Pierre Gasly scored twenty points in it, so the season proved less about him than the machinery, but a full year without a point is a hard thing to carry.

2026

The first full season he has started from the beginning has answered a good deal. Twelve rounds have produced 19 points and twelfth in the championship, with six finishes inside the top ten, a best of sixth, and not a single retirement. It is a modest haul by the standards of the front of the grid and a transformation by the standards of his own career, which until this year amounted to five points from twenty-seven starts.
